Independent variables are the variables that you change on purpose, and the dependent variable is the variable that changes based on how you change the independent variable. Like, say you want to experiment on a plant to see how tall it will get based on how much sunlight it gets. The sunlight would be the independent variable and the height of the plant would be the dependent variable.
