Persia was controlled by various tribes called Qizilbash. They controlled the ruling family because they controlled the military. Abbas became shah when he was a 16 and was also controlled by a mentor who favored the Qizilbash, Abbas took steps to gain control over a 10 year period. He had a good sense of timing and was patient. One thing he did was train Caucasian soldiers. They were not from any of the tribes. They converted to Islam and made for a force with allegiance only to the shaw. He developed a musketeer unit, a strike force. He also amassed more cannon and modernized weaponry. All of this contributed to his unifying the empire. The power of the Qizilbash was diminished. So he was able to enforce internal security. The Ottoman and Uzbeks were long time rivals to Persia. He scecured borders and retook lands that had been taken before. He had an alliance with the British against the Ottoman's. This help not only militarily but also brought in ideas from Europe that he use to strengthen his position. He turned Persia into an empire. Trade and the arts thrived on the stability.
