What sets apart a short story from a novel? A short story can typically be read in one sitting whereas a novel requires a longer time to read. Short stories tend to spend less time in character development, have simpler settings, and often end with a climax. A short story always has less than 100 pages, whereas a novel is always more than 200 pages. A short story has only one primary character whereas a novel always has two characters in conflict.
