I'm thinking the shift ideology of "American Isolationism" to "Protectors of Earth" in the wake of the US joining in the Second World War is a huge case of shifting ideologies. 

As for why it happened, well, the biggest, most devastating conflict ever to come to mankind's history came up. That's reason enough. 

Political/Social/Economics things would involve declarations of "Peace in our Time", the League of Nations, unwillingness to do anything other than mope around with the depression and a bunch of bad choices. And of course the Great Depression. That's a big one.
