Any ideas? :-)

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Do you know what a "correspondence" means?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

A function is defined as a correspondence between two sets, the domain and the range, which in your question are the set of x-values for the domain and the set of y-values for the range.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know what a function is? How many y values can x = ?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

A function is a special type of correspondence between these two sets, that assigns to each member of the domain EXACTLY one member of the range. That means for each and every x-value there must be one and only one y-value

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

In other words, no x-value can be assigned to two or more y-values. Now, look at option D and ask yourself is any x-value assigned to two or more y-values? If the answer is yes, then it is not a function; if the answer is no, then it is a function.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Note, each member of the range must be assigned to at least one member of the domain. Which means a y-value can have more than one x-value assigned to it, but it must have at least one.
