its a tough subject for some people, but it was where terrorists hijacked 2 airliners and crashed them into the twin towers in new your city an they fell not just killing themselves but everyone on board the plan and almost everyone in the towers.

four planes were hijacked by Al-Qaeda. Two flew into the twin towers, one into the pentagon, and one into a field in Pennsylvania (As a result of the passengers fighting back. It is thought that the fourth plane was headed for the White House of Capital Hill)
Over 3,000 died; victims were all from diverse ethnicity from 91 different countries.
This was the deadliest attack on U.S soil (and the one that had the biggest impact)
Osama Bin Laden was the leader of these attacks.
