Trade always grows an economy, unless a government screws it up.
When I sell you 10 widgets for 5 monkeys, you get widgets you didn't have before and I get some monkeys. I don't want all those monkeys so I trade one for a month supply of food. Now I don't have to work on my farm and I can build more widgets. 
I trade another monkey for widget parts. Now I have time and parts to make 15
