Yuan needs to take a taxi to get to the movies. The taxi charges $3.50 for the first mile, and then $2.50 for each mile after that. If the total charge is $9.75, how far is Yuan's taxi ride to the movie? 3.5 miles 2.8 miles 2.5 miles 3.9 miles

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

Can someone please explain the steps?

OpenStudy (ryanchick):

divid

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I gotcha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So first subtract $3.50 from $9.75 to get $6.25.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We now know for sure that she at least went one mile.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now we multiply $2.50 by 2 to get $5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now subtract $5 from $6.25 to get $1.25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is half of the price for one miles which means she only went half a mile.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now if we refer to our earlier problems we can deduce that she traveled 3.5 miles.

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

Thank you so much. I wasnt understanding it.

@BigPoppa117 , I had one more problem after this, and I keep getting 5.5, yet it said it was wrong.. Heres the problem - Yuan needs to take a taxi to get to the movies. The taxi charges $4.00 for the first mile, and then $2.75 for each mile after that. If the total charge is $19.13, how far is Yuan's taxi ride to the movie? 4.8 miles 5.5 miles 7 miles 6.5 miles
