which graph represents the function y=-2x^2-5?
what do you think?
well ok leats start: first of all this is a parabola cause it is in form y=ax^2+bx+c. If a is negative,, the graph looks downward. if positive, then upward. c is the point where the graph intersects the y asis. In our case it is -5. and a=-2.
it is a graph in form of U
and then?
@AlexandervonHumboldt2
well, i gave you the hints
you did?
yes #2 comment
but i still dont get it
i chose b am i right?
@rose4825
So since your a is negative the parabola would be opening downwards. This eliminates answers A and C, am I correct?
And since c = -5, the point where the graph intersects the y axis would be -5.
Since we eliminated two choice can you tell me which one you think would now be the answer? The point of intersection should be -5, keep that in mind. Just try to do it, and if you still do not understand, then I will help more.
@elvisiscool69 any ideas what the answer might be?
which graph represents the function y=-2x^2-5? Someone has already mentioned that this U-shaped graph opens down. How would y ou know that? First, y=x^2 denotes a parabolic graph. Secondly, that coefficient " -2 " forces the upward-opening parabola of y=x^2 to change direction 180 degrees so that the parabola now opens down.
elvis: Please graph y=x^2 now, using the Draw utility.

i think its d
Why do you "think it's d?"
bc - sign
Agreed. There's one more thing that you need to recognize before y ou make your final choice of answer. What is it?
-5?
What does that -5 stand for?
i have no clue lol
Then you're not ready to "think it's d."
but it is d
Both alexandervonhumboldt and rose4825 have already shared with you the meaning of that -5. Have you read and tried to understand their posts?
yes :)
Why do you "think its d?"
because -5 stands for the point of intersection on the y-axis
that's right, and because the -2 in front of x^2 indicates that the parabola opens downward. So, yes, "it's d." Hope you see why it's important to understand why one particular answer choice is better than the the others. The more undrstanding you develop, the higher your grades are likely to be.
thanks for sticking with me all this time. Good luck!
thanks i appreciate it
