why were trenches so important in WW1

I believe it's because a lot of the battles back in WW1 were fought in the open, so they had to dig trenches to have some cover. If they didn't, they all would have just been sitting ducks. Hope that helps :)

I agree in WWI they had to trenches each country sat in. in between the trenches was a place called no man's land because if you go there you will likely die. also in WWI all the battles were fought in trenches. A.K.A. Trench Warfare
