(FAN + MEDAL )Why do nations form alliances? Give examples of different kinds of alliances and explain their purposes
Think of it this way. Alliances form because nations have common interests that they want to protect. these alliances could be military alliances, where if say one nation knows that it can't defend itself from another nation it will form an alliance with another nation who is threatened. Example #1 military alliances. nation 1 is a military power and it has a large population and continues to build up its forces. nation 2 is a smaller nation, with a not so big population who is close to nation 1. Nation 3, doesn't like nation #1 period but is not as strong to take on nation 1 by itself. Result. Nations 1 and 3 form an military alliance against nation 1 Example #2 alliances that have to do with trade. nation #1 exports goods and it likes to devalue its currency, and dump goods on nations #2 and #3. nations #2 and #3 can form a trade alliance or pact where they put taxes on the goods coming in from nation #1. Example #3 alliances that deal with ideology. top example. take the cold war. Communism and capitalism. Soviet union and america. these alliances are formed because the countries share certain ideologies of government Capitalism/communism that align with those of larger nations. of course an alliance doesn't have to strictly be military or trade ideology etc etc. it could involve all three of those things but those are some notable examples that i've encountered. just remember though. relations among countries change in time and alliances can break.
