How did fighting in Iwo Jima & Okinawa affect the allies pacific strategy?

we got rekt m8 till we rekt them eventually we where going to invade but that would be to costly giving the stats of iwo jima and okinawa we then decided to nuke them instead

Weren't they island hopping? or was that a different part of the war? I do know it was a strategy in the Pacific
