Some people in the US got the idea that we should become an empire. This was at the end of 1800s, early 1900s. Taking Hawaii and then trying to keep possession of the Phillipines is an example of the empire building. They two ladies you mentioned were both alive at the time. They had opinions about the issue. So what you are looking for is what they had to say about the issue. In your readings, have you come across anything that they said or wrote?
no i am supposed to be comparing and contrasting anti imperialists vc pro imperialists during the american foregin policy between 1890-1920
maybe i am just mis understanding what i am supposed to be doing.
Adams and Wells fit into that time period. I'm a little confused why the link to Imperialism though. Wells was an early civil rights advocate. She is especially well known for her anti-lynching campaign. She didn't speak out against Imperialism that I remember but I'm sure she would be against it. She wrote about the need of white men to keep other races subordinate. That surely is part of what Imperialism was about. Jane Adamms is a bit easier. She was a pacificist. Against all war. She saw imperialism as an evil. A conversation between the two, would most likely have them both agreeing that the United States has no business trying to take over and run places like the Phillipines, Cuba and Puerto Rico.
Ohh okay you are helping me so much i can give you the list of people i can choose from if youd like and then can we pick the easiest ones?
ok
i was confused about ida b wells as well i was pretty sure she was a slavery activist
the pro imperalists are Minor C Keith Alfred Thayer Mahan William McKinley Theodore Roosevelt Josiah Strong
The anti Imperialists are Jane Addams Eugene Debs Samuel Gompers Jeanette Rankin Mark Twain Booker T Washington Ida B Wells Queen Liliuokalani Emilio Aguinaldo
I would choose Mckinley or Roosevelt and Queen Liliuokalani or Emilio Aguiaido. But it will depend on what information you have available to you. McKinley and Roosevelt were both National leadedrs who supported Impearialism. It should be easy to find info about them. Queen Liliuokalani was the monarch of Hawaii when the US took it. It's really a sad story. Sugar company owners wanted to control the islands. They put together an invasion and kicked her off the throne. It was totally illeagal. US government officials tried to make it right (they said). It was pretty ugly really. See what you can find. As you go through the details, you'll get a pretty good idea about what she would have to say about Impearlism Aquiaido was the leader of Philippine Independence. This gets ugly too. We go the islands from Spain after that war. We tried to keep them. So you end up with Filipinos fighting US forces to get the right to govern themselves. That's not what a democracy should be doing. it's absurd. Anyway, if you want to read up on that, you'd get plenty of material.
okay thanks
