What Do You Need Help With?

OpenStudy (ninafilipyeva):

A team of 7 explorers came to a river they needed to cross. They found two girls who had a rowboat. The boat could only carry two girls or 1 explorer at a time. How can all of the explorers get across the river using the girls' rowboat? How many trips would it take?

OpenStudy (ninafilipyeva):

And both of the girls to the starting side of the river.

OpenStudy (ninafilipyeva):

It is pretty hard. I tried to do this multiple times.

Atsie (atsie):

Well, if the boat can only handle TWO people at a time, and there are seven explorers....it'd take how many trips? There would have to be one person to take the boat back and fetch another explorer. So it'd have to be a girl and one of the explorers. After all of the explorers have been taken across then the one girl can come back and fetch the other girl and then they both could go home. Something that you could kind of think on :)

OpenStudy (ninafilipyeva):

Yes, but in class my teacher said it can't be like that. It is only either 2 girls or 1 explorer. But, some one has to take the boat bake. So this is so wrong.

OpenStudy (ninafilipyeva):

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OpenStudy (ninafilipyeva):

My only idea didn't work. PS the teacher said I am the smartest girl in class. Nobody got it from my class. This is our homework.

Atsie (atsie):

Wow! How on earth else would you do it then? I'm a lil baffled myself right now. That seems to be the only logical way... :/

OpenStudy (ninafilipyeva):

My answer was 16 trips. But, he (my teacher) said it is much more then I think it is.

OpenStudy (ninafilipyeva):

I came up with an answer to my own question!

OpenStudy (ninafilipyeva):

Both girls come to the other side of the river. The 1 girl goes away. She stays at the 1 side of the river while one explorer crosses the river. The 2 girl gets to the 1 side of the river, gets the 1 girl and crosses. 1 explorer crossed. When both of the girls are on the second side. 1 girls goes. She stays at the 1 side of the river while the 2 explorer crosses. The explorer hands the rowboat to the 2 girl. She crosses, gets the 1 girl and they both head to the 2 side of the river. 2 explorers crossed. And like this it goes on and on, all the way until all of the explorers crossed the river. Total:28 trips back and forth. Hard work lol.

Atsie (atsie):

Wow!! Good job! I'm gonna give you a medal just for finding an answer. I didn't even get to help you cuz I was so baffled myself, but thats really really good that you did that! :D
