I need help with this problem #48 http://my.hrw.com/math12/na_cc/hsm_larson/student/bookjpegs/alg1/alg1_cc_na_lar_12_0445.jpg

rishavraj (rishavraj):

@Ineedhelpfast12 whts the value of \[a^x \times a^y \]

OpenStudy (ineedhelpfast12):

that's what I am trying to figure out

rishavraj (rishavraj):

\[a^x \times a^y = a^{x+y}\]

OpenStudy (perl):

$$ \Large \frac{b^x}{b^y}= b^9 \implies b^{x-y} = b^9 \\ ~\\ \Large \frac{b^x \cdot b^2 }{b^{3y}}= b^{13} \implies b^{x+2 - 3y} = b^{13} $$

OpenStudy (perl):

to preserve equality, since their bases are equal, their exponents must be equal. So we need to solve x-y = 9 x+2 -3y = 13
