Private laws relate to specific institutions or individuals, while public laws are written for the general public to abide. Most laws passed by Congress are considered public laws, such as speed limits, legal drinking age and laws about cellphone use in school zones. Statutory/statute law are all/any laws established by an act of legislature. Statutes/laws are organized by subject matter and referred to in, "codes." Criminal codes/statutes for instance, would include all laws regarding domestic violence, robbery, grand theft, murder, etc. Family codes/statutes would include laws regarding divorce, child custody/visitation, etc.
