okay so in the sentence they used as an example "They were glad when i was finished" when was the subordinating conjunction. basically it wants the word that combines to independent sentences into one full sentence in itself. for example "They were glad." could be one sentence and "I was finished." is another. they combined them with the word "when" to make the example sentence.
