SOLVE: x - 3/7 = 9/14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well if the problem is subtraction, you can undo it with addition

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that didn't really help, but thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well we know that X is going to be bigger than the two numbers, so what can we add to get that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3/7 and 9/14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which is 1.0714

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you add them?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I googled it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do they have to have a common denominator?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes they do, so you add 3+ 9, and 7+14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought that was how to do it, but it just didn't seem right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so It's 12/21?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it is, and if you wanted to check it, just plug it in for X, and do 12/21 - 3/7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright, thanks! now that I look back, that was actually a really easy problem. Thanks for your time!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha no problem
