OpenStudy (tylerd):

Find the coefficients of a cubic function (linear algebra)

OpenStudy (tylerd):

OpenStudy (tylerd):

basically i can only figure out how to make 2 equations but have 4 unknowns

OpenStudy (tylerd):

not sure what they mean by horizontal tangent lines at those points.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

take the derivative, set it equal to zero and solve those give you the horizontal tangent lines

OpenStudy (anonymous):

clear or no?

OpenStudy (tylerd):

not clear. what do I take the derivative of?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[ax^3+bx^2+cx+d\]

OpenStudy (tylerd):

3ax^2+2bx+c=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it has to be zero if \(x=-2\) and also 0 if \(x=4\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

WRONG i meant 0 if \(x=-2\) and 0 if \(x=2\) sorry

OpenStudy (tylerd):

what about C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what about it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

put in \(x=2\) you get \[12a+4b+c=0\] as one equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then put in \(-2\) for \(x\) and get another one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

clear or no?

OpenStudy (tylerd):

gonna try something real quick with that equation
