Opposites are numbers that add to zero. They are also called additive inverses. For example, -1 + 1 = 0 -2 + 2 = 0 -10 + 10 = 0 Notice that in all cases, the two numbers are different. -1 is different from 1. -2 is different from 2. Which number do you add to itself and equals zero?
