265 . 786 ÷ 10 = 26 . 5786 as you can see, the decimal point moved 1 place to the left. It was between 5 and 7 before, now it is between 6 and 5. facing the number, it moved 1 place to the left.

so your're dividing by a whole number which will make the initial number smaller, so you know the decimal has to move left. Now a given rule is that multiplying or dividing by powers of ten will move the decimal right or left given the amount of zeros. So ten has one zero which means one to the left.
