Why civic and political participation is important: LINK: http://www.usip.org/guiding-principles-stabilization-and-reconstruction-the-web-version/8-stable-governance/civic-partic Reason: In every free country and or democratic republic, civic and political participation is needed because without it, the decisions about the affairs of the state would be left to a select few, which they could enact laws that aren't in the best interests of the public.

#2: LINK: http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/how-cesar-chavez-changed-the-world-3735853/?no-ist Reason: 5 decades ago, 35-year-old Mexican-American applied for unemployment in Bakersfield, California, and argued with the caseworker about how he wanted to characterize his previous job. He rejected each option which he received. His options were: clerk, playground supervisor, intermediate social worker with a second language. He said that none of them described what he did. Chavez’s decided to walk away from a good secure job as a community organizer, which was one of the many brave and fateful moves he made in his life. The most significant was his resolution to create what seemed impossible, a labor union for farmworkers. The organization he founded in 1962 grew into the United Farm Workers union, negotiated hundreds of contracts, a landmark law that made California farmworkers the only ones in the nation entitled to protected union activity. In his most enduring legacy, Chavez gave people a sense of their own power. Farmworkers discovered they could demand dignity and better wages. Volunteers learned tactics later put to use in other social movements. People who refused to buy grapes realized that even the smallest gesture could help force historic change.
