That is definitely an option. C and D are automatically not right. The author writing this sentence obviously did not mean that the engineers were miniature in size, he meant the trains. For D, it asked you to combine the thoughts into one sentence, and that is two. Which sounds like it makes more sense, A or B?

I also believe it is A. The 'ones' at the end of the sentence on choice B threw me off :P
