Argumentative Essay True freedom is not having anything holding you back from what you are and what you want to be, when you are free no one can tell you what to do, you can control your own life. However i agree with freedom must never be given, it must be demanded, as shown in the “i have a dream” speech Martin Luther was fighting for freedom and saying how society treated him and his people, even after the constitution was written, the states did not give them freedom until they forced them to. In addition in Abraham Lincoln's “Gettysburg Address” speech Lincoln showed freedom must be demanded through literary devices. In “ I have a dream” by Martin Luther King, King is explaining to the people that America is still not free even after all they have promised. “ This note was the promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”(King 48). However he realizes that even the Constitution did not relieve them of the “chains of segregation.”(King 50). Martin Luther King continues to describe in mostly literary devices all the promises they have been made that were never fulfilled. By giving this speech Martin Luther King was demanding freedom and so were the other thousands of people their. Abraham Lincoln's “Gettysburg Address” is also demanding freedom using literary divices. Lincoln explained how he believed that each men should be celebrated equally by building a cementery. “ The brave men living and dead, who struggled here have concecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did there.”(Lincoln 27). As Lincoln is delivering the speech he says how the world would not favor some people over others, rich over poor, white over black, or even North over Black. So Lincoln is demanding that there be a Cemetery built to celebrate everyone equally. Some people might argue and believe that freedom should always be given, they believe that everyone should be free and treated equally, and given freedom to do what they want. However sadly that is not the case, in “I have a dream” by MLK he is delivering the speech because ther Constitution did not honor its word and did not give freedom to all. To add on in the “ Gettysburg Address” Lincoln was demanding equality for all who served in the army, not favoriting one over the other. Once again he was not given it, he had to force the hand of inequality to listen to him. No one will ever give someone something as valuable as freedom it must be demanded and forced from the hand of the holder. In conclusion freedom must be demanded and is never given. As seen in past examples by MLK and Abraham Lincoln they had to demand freedom because it was never given to them even after being promised.
