OpenStudy (ryanchick):

In 2008, the world population is about 6,760,000,000. Write the 2008 world population in scientific notation.

OpenStudy (aihberkhan):

Okay. To find scientific notation you have to move the decimal to the end of the first digit. So it will look like this: \(6.760000000\)

OpenStudy (aihberkhan):

Then count how many digits there are from the decimal to the end of the whole number. So there are \(9\) digits. Keep that in mind.

OpenStudy (aihberkhan):

Now drop all the zeros. After you do this you should have all the information to write it in scientific notation! Write all the digits that are not zeros. So, \(6.76\) would come first. Then write \(*10^9\) after it. This is because we got 9 in the beginning and if we multiply \(6.76 * 10^9\) you should get \(6,760,000,000\).

OpenStudy (aihberkhan):

So the final answer is \(6.76 * 10^9\)
