Can anyone help me with Scientific Notation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How would the number 6,870,000,000,000,000 appear in scientific notation on a calculator screen? 6.87E-15 6.87E15 6.87E-16 6.87E16

OpenStudy (cjay99):

the number has to be between 1-10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Between?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

None of those numbers are between 1-10 though.

OpenStudy (cjay99):

well the ending number: 6,000,000 = 6 X 10 (to the 6th power)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it would be 6.87E16?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm so confused

OpenStudy (cjay99):

it would be 6.87E15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so look at it like this count all the numbers after the six because those are all insignificant numbers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there are 15 of them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But not all of them are 0's

OpenStudy (cjay99):

the decimal point is at the end of the last zero, so move it 15 times and then itll be between the 6 and the 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks! ::)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I get it now!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can only give one medal :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats fine im not really here for the medals or anything I mostly ask questions and stuff.

OpenStudy (cjay99):

OpenStudy (tboi):
