In each of the following situations, identify if there is a positive or negative externality in play. Explain you answer thoroughly. A local bridal shop shares a strip mall with eight other businesses. Recently all have agreed that the signage at the road needs a facelift. Although all eight businesses use the sign, the other seven are not willing to pay for a fresh paint job. The bridal shop decides to foot the bill and, on their own, they update the sign. Is there a positive or negative externality in play? Why?

OpenStudy (scarlett_feathers):

I said that it is a positive externality for the other businesses, but negative for the bridal shop, hence making the overall externaility negative. The bridal shop had to pay the extra external cost. Since their financial situation is undefined, but bridle shops are perfectly competitive they are on the negative end

i agree

Thank you ! Could you check a few more I have? @elite

OpenStudy (elite):

yeah but im not that good

OpenStudy (scarlett_feathers):

A local church holds a "4th of July Celebration" and invites everyone in their area to come enjoy free bounce-houses, live music and snow cones. My answer: This is an example of a negative externilty. Most churches are a typically non for profit organization. The external costs of hiring all theses "free" benefits would negatively impact their finances.

OpenStudy (elite):

NO couse churches financely good im its a church GOD would provide everything

OpenStudy (scarlett_feathers):

Yes but setting spirituality aside and looking into the fiances. Even Mega-churches can hit recessions

OpenStudy (elite):

yeah

Last one : A local high school decides to expand their bus ramp to help buses get in and out of the school more quickly. The construction process takes two months and creates serious traffic issues for the commuters in that area of town.

OpenStudy (scarlett_feathers):

This would negativity impact the surrounding traffic. It is a negative externality.

OpenStudy (elite):

yes thats negative for the rest of the people

OpenStudy (scarlett_feathers):

thx
