Respect is a positive feeling of admiration or deference for a person and their specific actions and conduct representative of that esteem. Normally when people respect somebody they give some sort of sign, this can be in their language, body language or how they act. Respect should be used in all aspects of life, and be given to everyone around you.

Respect is a valuable thing in life, and although it should be given, it should not be given freely to each and every stranger. Simple drug dealers should not be given respect, rather teachers and leaders should. Respect is also given out to “trainers”, such as in Karate or ju-jitsu. Respect can be earned for doing a great thing in your life, such as winning a war or landing a crashing plane safely.

Having respect is also important in life. For example, you do everything (and maybe extra) correctly in college. Your college teacher could recommend you for the certain job you wanted, because he/she respects you for your hard work. Respect can also be earned by just doing lots of little things, like getting your mother coffee every morning, doing lots of extra work every day, or by simply just telling the truth.

In China, it is not necessary to bow to one another as a greeting or parting gesture. Bowing is generally reserved as a sign of respect for elders and ancestors. The deeper the bow, the more respect they are showing. It is very important that you show respect to elders in China.

In Japan, it’s important that you bow to everyone that you greet to show respect. This bow can be 15 degrees as a greeting to a stranger, a 30 degree bow to show respect, or a 45 degree bow to show lots of respect. Respect is ritualized in this culture.

I believe that we need to show a bit more respect in America. It is important to act in a way to earn others respect and to associate or surround yourself with people that you respect. In America we need to stop respecting our TV heroes, movie stars, singers, etc., and respect our doctors, veterans, and leaders more. Respect should be given to everyone around you and seen in all aspects of life.
