Which expression can be used to determine the nth term in the pattern -4 -22 -52 -94 -198 A. -6n^2+2 B.-6n+2 C.6n^2-2 D. -4n-6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

n is just the number of the term you are trying to solve. (-4 = 1st term, -22 = second term, -52 = third term, and so on)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you plug in n = 1 to your first equation, like so: -6(1)^2 + 2 you get -4 as your first term in the pattern. If you plug in n = 2: -6(2)^2 + 2 you get -22.

You can check each equation using the same method, but the answer is A

OpenStudy (mathmale):

So, try finding the 3rd term, using the same expression.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Exactly. -6(3)^2 + 2 = -52

Thank you

No Problem :)

@Rodr1697 : Good explanation. However, it'd be much better to let your student verify the rest. Please do NOT hand out answers. Thank you.

@mathmale: You're right. Sorry about that.
