The rectangles shown are similar. What is the value of x? https://static.k12.com/calms_media/media/243500_244000/243533/1/3be7e613ac66660a67be3e9a9e20ed9211587f82/VHS_PA_S2_01_L216_L316_Q6.gif A. 10 B. 8 C. 54 D. 6

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Understand what "similar" means in "similar rectangles?"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope its c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12/3=4 18/3=6<---

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Please let's not talk in terms of "it's b" or "it's c." Instead, let's focus on HOW you calculate the length of the unknown side; please show all work done.

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

write the proportionality of similar sides so 12 18 --- = --- than cross multiplie and get 4 x 12x=18*4 divide both sides by 4 3x = 18 so try solve it for x hope these will help you sure easy

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Write a ratio of the lengths of the bottom sides; One such ratio would be \[\frac{ x }{ 18 }.\] this is (smaller) / (larger).

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Making use of the fact that these 2 rect. are similar, write a similar (smaller) / larger ratio and equate it to the previous ratio. Sove the resulting equation for x and you'll be done.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4*3= 12 18*3 = 54 C is the answer

OpenStudy (triciaal):

the direction is important
