Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints were persecuted and driven out of homes in New York, Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. These Christians did believed a new book of scripture, The Book of Mormon, had been translated by a modern prophet, Joseph Smith. These beliefs were different than most American Christians at the time. Members of the Church became known as Mormons because of the Book of Mormon. They moved because of the persecution. Homes were burned, leaders arrested, freedoms were denied and people killed.
