-machine learning
-steganography
-encryption
-game development
-minecraft plugins
-webgl / javascript libraries: three.js (threejs.org) / babylon.js
-app development for android (java) or IOS (I think swift)
-other languages, c++ / c# / java / python
-penetration testing / hacking

In terms of figuring out what to start with, try and think of what inspires you, or what skills would be necessary to create a certain program.

For most of the topics, textbooks can really pay off. http://www.amazon.com/ is a good place to search. Barnes and Noble might have a section for software as well.
