How do variables help you model real-world situations?

One example is buying gas for your car. Say gas costs 3.60 and you want to buy 10 gallons of gas for your car. You would use 3.60x. With variable x representing gallons, and in this case x=10.
This example is a little simple but you can do some elaborating.
