WILL FAN AND MEDAL Point C is located at (1, 2) and point D is located at (−4, −2). Find the x value for the point that is 1 over 4 the distance from point C to point D. −0.25 3.25 −3.75 1.25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

- 3.75 i think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know the answer, it's -0.25 , but I dont understand why

OpenStudy (retireed):

Good I got the -0.25 but i was confident in the answer. Do you still need help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, I want to understand how to do it.

OpenStudy (retireed):

oops that was wrong re drawing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i understand how to plot the points,

OpenStudy (retireed):

|dw:1454596866665:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the x on the graph and how does the x is 0.25 down and 0.25 from c = -0.25, and what is the x2

OpenStudy (retireed):

Sorry I am making more of this than it actually is... calculate the delta X which is 5 1/4 of 5 is 1.25 subtract 1.25 from point C's x value which is 1 1 - 1.25 is - 0.25

OpenStudy (retireed):

Did that makes sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, not really, what is a delta

OpenStudy (retireed):

Sorry I was having OS issues.... delta is a term used for the change of or difference between so delta X is just X at Point C minus the X at Point D 1 - -4 = 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok, I think I get it now

OpenStudy (retireed):

A easier way to look at this is similar triangles.... if you move a quarter distance along the hypotenus you move a quarter distance along the X and the Y directions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok I understand the last part the most, but are you able to do it the same way for other problems.

OpenStudy (retireed):

A more complex thing to do is calculate the slope of the line y = mx + b m = rise over run delta y / delta x = 4 /5 y = (4/5)x + b calculate b by using know x and y values solving for b 2 = (4/5) 1 + b 2 - 0.8 = b b =1.2 equation of the line is y = 0.8 + 1.2 with the equation you can plot the graph using a graphing calculator and figure out X for different values of Y

OpenStudy (retireed):

Yes do you have another example?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No I only had the one, I can look for one, but Im trying to prepare for my mosule 6 DBA today

OpenStudy (retireed):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Point E is located at (2, −3) and point F is located at (−2, −1). Find the y value for the point that is 3 over 4 the distance from point E to point F.

OpenStudy (retireed):

I also have to do a quick sketch, but I will just do it on paper.

OpenStudy (retireed):

What is delta Y? (-1) - (-3) =

OpenStudy (retireed):

So the Y value we want is 1/4 from F towards

OpenStudy (retireed):

SO a quarter of 2 is 0.5 Since the line is sloping down .... subtract 0.5 from -1
