Raj paid $31.86 for a new basketball. The price he paid included sales tax of 6.25%. Which equation can be used to find the price, p, of the basketball before tax? A. p + 0.0625p = 31.86 B. 6.25p = 31.86 C. 0.0625p = 31.86 D. p + 6.25p = 31.86
@YoungStudier
can you guess?
hello?
@Study312 sorry was trying to figure it out i think b
How does tax work? Do you calculate it passed on the final price or the original price? Do you add it to the original price or what?
@tkhunny orginal
Okay, and is sales tax usually a GIANT number or something rather small by comparison?
small
6.25% as a decimal is 0.0625 and you don't get taxed each basketball unless you buy them separately, so if 0.625p is the price before tax then we add the tax on so then what would the answer be? In other words price + price
@Study312 25.61
no you're not adding,subtracting,multiplying, or dividing. which one of the choices best matches the hint I gave you?
@Study312 a?
Yes! Great job :D
People are SO impatient. Take a look as B. and D. See that 6.25p? That is a HUGE number. That can't possibly be right. This would mean the tax is more than SIX TIMES the prices. LET'S just throw those out right away. Now, let's look at C. We have 0.0625p. I like that. We seem to have calculate the tax, but we didn't add it to anything. This is JUST the tax. That's no good. I think we should take a GOOD HARD look at choice A. What do you think?
