here you should see that the two triangles, smaller and the larger can be shown to be similar the corresponding sides are in the same proportion ratio of the bases = ratio of another side, y to 21 is the same as 6 to (6+8) \[\frac{ y }{ 21 }=\frac{ 6 }{ (6+8) }\]
