How can you tell the difference between incomplete and complete combustion? Is the heating of baking soda considered combustion? If so, which type?

Complete combustion means done in excess oxygen which products carbon dioxide; while incomplete combustion the reaction happens in less oxygen giving off carbon monoxide as a product.
