Is cereal a homogeneous or heterogeneous mixture? And is milk a homogeneous or heterogeneous mixture?
Well, do you know what homogeneous and heterogeneous mean?
I know that homogeneous is a constant mixture and heterogeneous contains a lot of different components. I think?
Well, yes. The differences between the two is that with a homogeneous mixture it is essentially uniform throughout and maintains its mixture whereas a heterogeneous mixture is poorly mixed and you can see its individual pieces that are mixed up
So a bowl of cereal has individual pieces of cereal scattered around, whereas milk is uniform and well mixed. So that makes them?
The cereal heterogeneous and the milk homogeneous?
yes
But earlier I asked someone else and they said that under a microscope "homogenized milk is seen to consist of globules of fat dispersed in a watery medium"
Or is that going too deep?
Yeah thats true. If you were to look under a microscope of milk you would see a heterogenous type of mixture but from the question you asked it wants a generalized answer I'm assuming so I would say that a glass of milk (no microscope haha) is homogeneous whereas the cereal (large chunks) would be hetero
That's what I think the assignment calls for, just a general answer. You're right! Thank you so much !
No problem but I would make extra sure of everything. It gets tricky cause if the cereal is the same its considered homogeneous as well. If its a mixed cereal like lucky charms it should be hetero
I should have mentioned that actually. If the cereal isn't specifically called out and its just "cereal" I would have to assume it's all the same throughout actually so that should make it homogeneous.
It been awhile since I took chemistry. All in all (cereal is 100% the same) it's homo and if milk is 100% same homo as well. if the cereal isnt the same and has differences in its mixture it's hetero (such as the lucky charms ect)
Cereal like corn flakes!
Should be homo then :P
I hate it when the questions are bland like that
Easy way to think of this is, heterogenous is easy to tell the difference between all the quantities in the mixture, for example a salad, that's heterogenous. You have your lettuce, cucumbers etc, easy to differentiate! But homogeneous is something which is hard to differentiate, so something like mouthwash, you don't know all the stuff inside it, just see the liquid you cannot differentiate all the chemicals :P
thank you both!
