It's just harmless chatting, right? http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/slain-teen%e2%80%99s-social-media-life-becomes-cautionary-tale-for-peers/ar-BBpbTFz?ocid=spartandhp
Follow the rules. DON'T give out personal, private information. DON'T mess with relationship or dating issues. STAY SAFE.
I totally agree..... Online dating is dumb and worthless :P
people can lie about virtually anything including their age.
Not only lie about their age but also what they look like too. People will use some random photo online when in real life they don't look anything close to the picture.
I remember reading a story about a guy 18 who went out with a girl on one of those sites, supposedly 19, who lied about her age ~16. the guy got charged as a sex offender.
Oh yeah. The classic fake Myspace profile stories.
A lot of immoral / selfish people out there looking to take advantage of others, be careful.
@woodrow73 couldn't have said it better
Oh my gosh... That made me cry. I had a friend that that happened to when we were in 7th grade...)':
Typical.
You're such a cutie, Tk <3
TK these are the reasons why OS scares me hell online in general scares me. I was watching videos on YouTube about experiments made by youtubers where they picks girls up after whatever things they were doing and man most of the girls were soooo stupid! THEY JUST GOT IN THE CAR! I was yelling at the girl for not getting into the car. smh.
the point here is to not get too desperate for love
Internet is more dangerous now then I was first online back in 1999. It wasn't as intense, but there were jerks on yahoo chat and aim.
yup giving private info is harmful i fully agree
"the point here is to not get too desperate for love" Why can't you just find someone in-person...?
maybe in-person doesn't fit the type of features or requests that the other person has. ?!
Sarcasm was always difficult to draw in diction
umm be mature enough thats it btw hi @Data_LG2 :)
tk I really think you're cherry picking your cases here...
The way I see it, there are a LOT of ways to get into dangerous situations, and when it comes down to it, I'm more worried about getting hit by some drunk idiot when I'm walking around than by getting lured into a trap and cruelly murdered. I guess though, this is just another danger among many.
Albeit both being perilous; Tk is inferring the probable hazards of chatting. Your connotation is broadly different, Inky.
I mean, the way I see it, there are a lot of seemingly innocuous things that aren't so. For instance, riding in a car, or for instance, riding a bike, or even playign a sport
It'd be interesting to see a statistical analysis on what innocuous things are considered the most dangerous. For one, I know showers and bathtubs are extraordinarily risky places.
Those events are immeasurable, however. Chatting itself is different, you can avoid various problems from taking a happening if you conduct upon rules, mate.
Immeasurable? I don't understand. Tk could easily tell us to be safe drivers, watch both ways before we cross the street, or make sure we shower when we're fully awake to prevent fatalities... or even a reminder that stairs are very dangerous and to climb them carefully might have as great or greater of an impact than linking to an article... I would almost call these scare tactics, but that may be a bit oextreme of me.
Not cherry picking at all. The scope of my interest in posting this article is OpenStudy behavior. The case fits quite nicely in the context of OpenStudy. We have rules. Those rules should be followed. This will contribute to the safety of all OpenStudy participants. Yes, there are many ways to act stupidly and get into trouble. The way I see most often, first hand, in OpenStudy, is the playing of relationship games online and the interchange of personal, private information online. It is an excellent story to emphasize the potential magnitude of this error - leaving discussion of other sorts of errors for another day. No need to fail to have an important discussion on one or two things because we can't have an important discussion on every conceivable thing. Also, admittedly, there are also many ways to act wisely and still get into trouble through no fault of your own. Let's not get cynical. Let's do our best to control what we can.
You're missing the point, here. Chatting does not compare to driving.
It does, and I have just compared it, lol. I just don't agree with the statement being made here :)
tk's dedication to keeping OS in order is admirable
I reckon via the second law this place will be in ruins soon... not that I don't think it isn't already.
lol
Wow, that is just wow. Stay safe on the Internet, Kids!
@batmano3 @brianna_earls @blondie$$$ @elite @Electric_Blue @priencess_j @Charles.305 @cmtboy2 @NatsuOniKaze
Try to kill me, and I'll have you by your feet in 2.3 seconds, and it takes me 1.2 seconds to go psycho. This is pure insanity '-'
Great! now i'm afraid of bathtubs and showers :/ thanks @inkyvoyd
@baru , I am not sure if you are being sarcastic or not, but a quick google search yields this: http://articles.latimes.com/2011/jun/09/news/la-heb-bathroom-injuries-20110609
i do see your point, statistically, the seemingly harmless stuff tend to be most dangerous. i remember reading death by cow is more likely than shark... but one cant function by constantly being afraid of everything.
I wouldn't say it's about being afraid of everything so much as it is about being aware of things. For instance, to those speeding on the highway, I wonder if they realize that E=1/2mv^2 and not just mv....
yep,but there is a point when it becomes an overload. there is only so much the mind can take...
Thanks for sharing this @tkhunny !!
never give or ask for it. didn't knew it needs to be posted here cause it is obvious.
I agree. Most people are oblivious to the fact that predators lurk on every corner, EVEN if its virtual. Thats why I don't post my picture on any website, and or tell my personal information. Most teens say, "Hey its harmless, no one can figure out its me!" Wrong. People do know how to hack locations, and you ARE monitored. Guys, more and more teens are being stalked on the web and more than 35% DOESN'T even notice. Stay safe my fellow owlets. (Thanks for bringing this up @tkhunny, an important lesson we should all know and gain conscious of.)
what if soemone else see's your number and calls you ;~; or sts to stalk you ?
i mean stalks you
cool, so someone got slaughtered because they gave out their adress? :D
hmmm like inspecetr them self HAHA!!!
Sounds like the victim was already physically involved with at least one older person prior to the murder. According to washington post: "Two law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation said that Eisenhauer and Nicole had sexual contact before her disappearance and that he lured her out of her home to kill her." I don't think it helps that she was a bully victim, and depressed. rip
Ugh my thing is just that online dating shouldn't exist
Exactly, you don't know WHOM you are actually dating, for all you know it can be a sexual predator, that is over 45, and stalks 17 - 20 year olds.
17-20? Maybe 12-14? Also, maybe.
^ Indeed.
The best thing to do is to get rid of the chats. The people that go to PA are from the OS chats.
Anyone else agree with me that tkhunny just posted an external link?
err?
Yeeeee!!! But Tkhunny is a great Moderator! Be nice to them is one of the Rules in the Code of Conduct.
I wasn't mean to anyone right now...
I mean let's not try to get them Banned or Suspended. :P
I completely \(\large\bf\cal\color{green}{Agree}\) with @TheSmartOne that tk posted an \(\bf\color{red}{external~ link}\)! and this is against the rules right?
Yea! And I had posted that when he first made the post but tkhunny deleted my comments. Abuse of powers! And when somebody posts a YouTube link to a math calculus video in the chat, they get a warning from tk!
i remember this @imqwerty
Yes!! i saw your comment too and then it got deleted! ): I saw him delete this post where nothing was inappropriate http://prntscr.com/a9a9w3 i might get banned for sharing this link because he might think that its not my property but let me tell you i own lightshot
LOL I remember that post!! He deleted it!! Wow! That post where he was getting bad ads because of his own searches. x'D
