Well, I always try to encourage background because without backgrounds it looks like the characters are in 'suspended animation'. 1# is more dark. 2# is more friendly. I like both of them equally. I think if you added a background to the 2nd one and added shading it would look better. :)

Oh, well I use a an app. It's called Autodesk Sketchbook. It's very helpful to me. Although I do have a intuos wacom tablet that can be hooked up into the computer.
