Help figuring out Lateral area of a right triangle prism

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im trying to figure out how you work out this problem, im not good at square rooting

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

these measures are 8 -4 - 6 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, i did i think for Lateral Area= 6 times 8 to get 48..?

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

but will be 2*6*8 +8*4 the lateral area because how is drawing there so the base is a triangle and on the top is a triangle too - so this mean that the laetral area will be added, assumed by these area of 3 rectangles ok. ?

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

do you understand it why ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok it making a little more sense now, didnt think of of the triangle on top and the one on the bottom. So then would it be 96+32 to get 128..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Am i on the right track?

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

yes sure exactly

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

good work was my pleasure good luck bye

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok would that be it then? I am confused on why for the answer mark for this blank with a plus and then a square root..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Like im suppose to have a square root somwhere..?

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

why you think that will be squareroot ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have no idea, on my paper its like (___+___*squareroot*)

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

sqaureroot can being there just than you calculi area of triangles from the base and the top but above we have said it that the lateral area is formed just from rectangles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, so the lateral area is just the 128 then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or is the total area suppose to be that second part?

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

so indifferent than you calculi area of these triangles from the top and the base not will be there like result squarrot in your answer sure because area of triangles from the base and the top - because these triangles are right so than you know the height of them and the base - and you know it sure that area of a triangle is base time height divide 2 yes ,

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

indifferent the total area not will have the result squarrott too

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

because there are rectangles with area width time length and right triangles with area base time height divide 2 - so this is sure that not will be there in your answer never squarroot hopw this will help you understanding it yes ,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok kind of confusing but i see that either way there is no square root even with the total area

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

ok. was my pleasure good luck bye
