If a train is going at a rate of 85 miles per hour how long will it take to reach it's destination 1000 miles away if it takes a 10 min break every 3 hours.

OpenStudy (isaiah.feynman):

First we know that without taking breaks the train will take almost 12 hours.

I will give medal to best answer

OpenStudy (isaiah.feynman):

So, that means it would take a 10 minute break 4 times in 12 hours, which is 40 minutes total. That means it would (12+2/3) hours to reach the destination.

OpenStudy (retireed):

How about recalculating a new unit rate, in miles per minute.

Thank you

OpenStudy (retireed):

Every 3 hours and 10 minutes the train goes 85mph * 3 hours or 255 miles in 190 minutes.

OpenStudy (retireed):

1000 miles / 255 miles /190 minute = 745 minutes 745 minutes / 60 minutes/ hour = 12. 41 hours 12 hours and 25 minutes
