Convection and Conduction use the atoms, ions, and molecule which to transfer the kinetic energy. Temperature measures the average kinetic energy of these particles. So, the transfer of "heat energy" is actually the result of atoms, ions, and molecules transfeering kinetic energy. In empty space there are no atoms, ions, and molecules.
