OpenStudy (mbma526):

What caused the cattle industry to lose profitability? During this time, pork became more popular and considered the "new meat". Beef went down in price and farmers could not move the cattle due to fences. Settlers became vegetarians and did not eat meat. When the cows became too large, it became more difficult to herd them. Due to disease, cattle became sick and unable to be processed for meat.
