On August 2, 1964, North Vietnamese torpedo boats attacked an American destroyer off the coast of North Vietnam. A second attack on American destroyers was reported two days later. The adminstration of Lyndon B. Johnson maintained that the American destroyers had been on routine patrols in international waters. Furthermore, the administration claimed these were unprovoked attacks on the United States by North Vietnam. But, the events of the so- called Gulf of Tonkin incident would become surrounded in a storm of controversy. I guess your taking a Vietnam class right?
