Remember that "it's" is a contraction of "it is." If you put "it's" you would pretty much be saying 'The car is showing it is age." Does that make sense? No, so you would have to put its.

Is the setting not important to the story? If I didn't know that a story was heppening underwater, would it make sense to say that a sea horse floated by? So, the setting is actually very important to the story.
