Please help...I am really bad at math and need a step by step.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Please, type in your math problem first, and then please omit the "I am really bad at math" part. Why shoot yourself in the foot?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The problem is your friend clipped a coupon from the newspaper that offered 25 percent your lunch. the lunch cost 19.27 but I don't know how to find the answer

OpenStudy (mathmale):

This being algebra, choose any letter of the alphabet to represent the amount your lunch cost before the 25% discount. If we choose x to represent this, calculate the 25% discount and write it here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

$4.82 I Think

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

so.. are you looking for, how much was the lunch without the 25% off?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, with the 25% off

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well... so 19.27 - the 25%?

OpenStudy (study312):

25% as a decimal is 0.25. so what is 0.25 x 19.27?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so 4.82

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

4.82 is the 25% of 19.27, yes

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

\(\bf {\color{brown}{ 25}}\%\ of\ 19.27 \implies \cfrac{{\color{brown}{ 25}}}{100}\cdot 19.27\implies {\color{brown}{ 25}}\div 100\cdot 19.27\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But then it says find the tax which is 7% so would that be 0.7 x 4.82

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well... nope your cost is really 19.27 plus the savings, the 25% so 19.27 - 25% the tax includes the subtotal amount hmmm 7/100 is NOT 0.7 btw, is 0.07 so 0.07 * (19.27 - 4.82)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay let me try that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.01?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

yeap, the tax will be $1.01, a buck and 1penny

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Let's start over. This problem need not be complicated. Let x = original price of lunch Let 0.25x = the 25% discount The "net price" (price after discount) is (1-0.25)x=$19.27

OpenStudy (mathmale):

...which translates into 0.75x=$19.27. Divide both sides by 0.75 and you'll h ave your answer, the original price, x.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Calculate $19.27 / 0.75, please.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the last step is you have to tip the waitress 15% So would you do 5.83 x 19.27

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Could we finish one part at a time, please? What is the value of x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

25.69?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

yes.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

That's your first answer. Any questions regarding how we obtained that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, but now I need to find the tax Which is 7%

OpenStudy (mathmale):

So, you have to pay 7% tax? Is that 7% on the full price (x) or on the discounted price (0.75 x)?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

My guess is that you're taxed on the discounted price, which is ... what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So 25.69 x .07

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Please, T_T, answer my question (above).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5.83 i think

OpenStudy (mathmale):

T_T: I am becoming a bit frustrated because you're not answering my questions. I asked you whether sales tax is charged on the entire (before discount) amount, or on the discounted price (after discount). If you ignore my questions, whether by accident or intentionally, you can't expect my interest level to remain high.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I am getting off the 'Net for now.
