hartnn (hartnn):

you have the angle, you have the adjacent side. you need the opposite side. which trigonometric ratio has adjacent side and opposite side in its formula? sin or cos or tan ?

OpenStudy (ohohaye):

Tan

hartnn (hartnn):

correct! use it

hartnn (hartnn):

\(\Large \tan 47 = \dfrac{opposite}{adjacent}= \dfrac{x}{35}\) can you find x from there?

OpenStudy (ohohaye):

Yeah, thank you

OpenStudy (ohohaye):

Wait, it is coming out as a negitive

OpenStudy (ohohaye):

@hartnn

hartnn (hartnn):

x= 35 tan 47 = 37.53.

OpenStudy (ohohaye):

I'm still confused. I type in tan 47 and it comes out as -0.124 and then when I type in 35 tan 47 it comes out as -4.358

OpenStudy (ohohaye):

@retirEEd

OpenStudy (phi):

Your calculator is in radian mode instead of degree mode it is interpreting the 47 as being in radians (equivalent to 2692.9 degrees) You should change to *degree mode*

OpenStudy (ohohaye):

Oh, ok. Thank you so much
