Help please! I need explanation too. Fan and Medal
-2 < y < -1
-20 < 10y < -10 -2^-n < y^-n < -1^-n -1 / 2^n < 1/y^n < -1
I am sorry but I don't get anything that you wrote. ;s
Choose a number within the range you are given. Then use it in each expression in the choices. Then see which one gives you the greatest value.
Can you name one number that is in between -2 and -1?
Plot both -2 and -1 on a number line. Which number is to the right of the other on this graph? Now identify a number between -1 and -1. It'll be a negative number.
^Now identify a number between -2 and -1.
-2 and -1? shouldn't it include just something like -1.2 or so ;/ i dont get it
Yes, exactly. You can pick -1.2, -1.5, -1.8, -1.1, or any other number between -2 and -1. Now use the number you picked, -1.2, in all the expressions in the choices. Then see which one gives you the greatest value.
can this question be done without a calculator? I am very worried as this test is extremely important and they don't allow the use of a calculator i dont know why? @mathstudent55
number properties? what do i need to learn to solve questions like this? this section is timed (1.2 minutes per question)
I think you can figure it out without a calculator. Let's say you pick -1.5 to be y. A. \(10y = 10(-1.5) = -15\) B. \(y^{-2} = (-1.5)^{-2} = \dfrac{1}{1.5^2} \) C. \(y^{-3} = (-1.5)^{-3} = -\dfrac{1}{1.5^3} \) C. \(y^{-4} = (-1.5)^{-4} = \dfrac{1}{1.5^4} \)
^Last line above is D. not C. A. The first one is easy to do. Just multiply -1.5 by 10. You get -15 B. and D. you get two positive results, but since the denominator in D. is a larger number, the result of B is greater than the result of D. C. The result is negative. Form the above, which one can you conclude is the greatest number?
B!
Correct.
