In the body paragraphs, focus on summarizing the work(s) and supporting your argument with evidence, including quotes and paraphrasing. Offer a conclusion in your closing paragraph: Refer to your initial argument and offer your opinion. One way of writing a critical review is by comparing two works of literature. You might compare how two works address the same subject or theme. You also might compare elements of poetry such as use of figurative language, sound devices, or rhyme and rhythm. Go to p. 432 in Literature to analyze a model critical review. Note that in her thesis statement, or statement of her main idea, Joyce makes a claim that she will then support with evidence. She is comparing two works that have a common theme. She uses the body of the essay to develop an argument. She summarizes the works, supports her claims with evidence, and addresses a counterclaim. Finally, she concludes her essay by restating her argument and offering her opinion of the value of the two works.
